In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, the implementation of academic activities must adapt to online methods. Of course, Stikes Notokusumo has also adapted to this online learning method. However, this does not dampen efforts to provide quality learning and keep up with scientific developments. Likewise, to increase understanding regarding advances in medical technology in handling Covid-19, Stikes Notokusumo held an expert lecture entitled “Bioimmunotechnology in Handling Covid-19” by presenting experts in the field of Molecular Biology from the Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta, namely Mr. Peni Indrayudha, M. Biotech, Ph.D. This activity took place on Thursday 12 November 2020 at 13.00 until 15.30 WIB.
This expert lecture explains the principles of biotechnology based on molecular biology and immunology mechanisms that play a role in handling Covid-19, including diagnostic biotechnology (bioassay), therapeutic biotechnology, and biotechnology in vaccine development. Diagnostic biotechnology (bioassay) includes antigen or antibody-based rapid tests, as well as swab tests which are analyzed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Meanwhile, for therapy, there is the option of using convalescent plasma obtained from Covid-19 survivors. And for vaccine development, there are various types including inactivated viruses, RNA, protein subunits, viral vectors which are currently being developed by various biotechnology laboratories in various countries.
